Pathway To Adoption

Sleeping Arrangements

About a year ago, I came up with a sleeping arrangement for my future adopted daughters. The arrangement consisted of them sharing the bed in the guest bedroom. In fact, I had transformed my guest bedroom into the girls’ bedroom. Because I’m expecting small children, I figured they will want to be in the same bed starting out.

Then, I was going to turn my office into their playroom. I moved my desk into my bedroom and transferred all my office files into my craft room. This way, the girls would have their own bedroom AND a playroom ! I was so excited about this. I was constantly looking at YouTube videos on how to set up a playroom. I had filled my Amazon cart with playroom décor and bins. I couldn’t wait to start decorating !

Then, I found out I found out some important news about sleeping arrangements when adopting through foster care. I found out that each child had to have their own bed. Even if they’re siblings, they can’t share a bed. This posed a dilemma because I had the girls sharing a queen bed. Once I learned they had to have their own beds, this changed things dramatically.

Since the bedroom I was placing them in had a queen bed, there was no room to put another bed in there. This meant I had to either separate the girls or just place them in another room and buy twin beds. Because I wanted to keep them in the same room, I opted to choose another room and just plan to buy twin beds/ cribs. I had a home office and a craft room left to choose from.

I had already cleared out my home office to make it a playroom. I could have used that room for the girls’ bedroom, but it was smaller than my craft room. So, I ended up moving my office stuff back into its original room along with all my craft stuff. Then, I gave the girls my craft room. Doing so took away the girls’ playroom, but I had no choice. (Sad face.)

At least they’ll be in the same room. When and if they want, they can always separate and the older one can take the big room with the queen bed whenever she’s ready. For now, the guest bedroom will remain a guest bedroom. I just transferred all the décor and toys to the new room. I will buy furniture once I get the placement. I’m not sure if I’ll need cribs or beds, so I’m waiting to find out the ages before I make a major purchase like that. Although I’m grieving the  playroom, I’m looking forward to decorating this new room. I’m sure everything will pan out beautifully.

The takeaway is that each foster child in the state of GA must have their own bed! I’m not sure if all states have that same standard, but be sure to check with your agency so that you’ll know how to properly set up sleeping arrangements. Hope this helps someone.

See you next post !
